The loss of study time, sleep and just “down time” takes its toll on many students. This often leads to skipping classes and absences. Once students fall behind from the absences, many cannot get caught up. Sometimes they fall so far behind that they either fail or drop out.
“Working really messes up my schoolwork because I don’t get enough sleep and I don’t get enough time to do school work,” says senior Ashley Kriz.
But working isn’t just something students do to earn extra bucks at the cost of their education. Some need to work in order to buy a car for transportation, and then pay for its insurance, gas and upkeep. This becomes a constant bill that must be maintained. Other students actually work to help out their families.
There is a way for both school and work to coexist and help benefit everyone involved, however. Work Experience at Legacy High School is a class where students who work can receive credit for the educational value they receive from working. It is a win-win situation because students and teachers combine the need to work with the need for credits.
If you find yourself in a situation where you need to work but don’t want to get behind in school, see your counselor for details. Work Experience may be offered at your school and could just be the perfect solution to a difficult situation.
