Recently, Northwest Career and Technical Academy students were able to take part in “Camp Wanna Be a Nurse.” This is a nursing camp where students interested in the medical field receive the chance to spend one day in the life of a nurse.

At local hospitals, students followed assigned nurses into such experiences as open heart surgeries, leg amputations and even had the opportunity to watch the birth of a newborn baby.

After spending the first half of the day with their nurse leaders and witnessing events that many never get to see when visiting a hospital, the students were given lunch and sent back to finish off the day.

Lexi Berry, a NWCTA student who attended the event, says she witnessed the birth of a baby, visited the different departments of a hospital and was able to spend time in the neonatal intensive care unit.

“Seeing the baby being born was absolutely amazing,” Berry says.

Another student, Laura Hidalgo, especially enjoyed being in the pediatric emergency room, which gave her a greater understanding of the responsibilities and roles of a nurse.

By attending this event, students were able to grasp a better concept of what it is like to be in the medical field and how a day in the life of a nurse really goes. They earned respect for the nurses and learned that working as a nurse is a good option for many of their lives. The camp opened student eyes to a whole new world in the medical industry.

Discussions of doing another camp later in the year are already underway.
