Soccer players improve season through bonding and teamwork

Girls’ JV soccer wrapped up their season at Foothill High School 8-5-2 after a long season of becoming a team.

“Basic was the worst game,” says Sage Long. “We basically just fell apart. We didn’t work as a team, which killed our chances of winning.”

They soon learned how to work as a team, however, by getting together outside of practice, helping each other and staying positive. When the time came to replay Basic High School, they won.

“Coming back and winning against Basic was the best game,” says Captain Amber Berry. “We showed that we could beat them, and we just had to work together.”

The Del Sol game was also a good turning point. Team members worked well with each other and connected passes more efficiently.

“We all worked really hard. We all wanted to win the last game more than any other game,” says Long.

Ending the season with a win made it a positive season.

Captains Berry and Cally Martin had to make sure all the girls were okay through the season. They took care of everything and made sure the girls got along. If not, they had to come up with ways to fix situations so everything would work out.

Next year, the girls want to try out as a team. They all agree that the team is the best part of soccer and they all love theirs.

“I could call like every one of my teammates my best friend,” says Martin.

On the Varsity side, students also had to figure out how to work together and get their confidence level up in order to make it through the season. Passing was the biggest thing to overcome.

“We had to see what jelled with the team,” says player Lauren George. “The worst game was away at Basic. We were playing like we didn’t even want to be there,” she adds. Confidence definitely needed to be boosted for the girls too.

“They needed to think they were better than they actually were. Once that happened we were doing great,” says Coach Andrew Risheg.

After the first two goals Basic scored, it seemed like the girls had lost all hope. Some players were out for academic reasons and some were playing positions they weren’t used to playing.

“We all have our good and bad games,” says Ann Bergmann. “In the VoTech [SECTA] game I got a lot of good crosses, and we had a great defense.”

They all agreed that the Green Valley High School home game was the best as a team. The girls kept the score 0-0 until the last minutes of the game.

“Usually they score five or six goals on us,” says Risheg. “Having a 0-0 game that long against them was really great.”

The team bonding was the most rewarding part for all the girls.

“Playing the game and having your teammates by your side is the best. Just like a family,” says Bergmann.
